Why Does Public Speaking Coaching Matter?
WNYC is my local NPR station. It has roughly a million unique listeners every week — more than any other public radio station in the U.S. (maybe the world!).
So it was a total thrill when popular morning host Brian Lehrer kicked off a show on coaching with this quote from yours truly:
Public speaking isn’t really about presentations. It’s about your right to be heard, and your mission in life, what you’re here to say.
As an introvert, I don’t usually broadcast my deepest thoughts (which is why I sent this one to Brian via email), but I meant every word of it.
The mechanics of public speaking are fascinating, and I’m sure I’ll spend the rest of my life studying them.
And coaching is beyond big fun. Besides being a unique individual and potential friend, every client is a riddle to be solved, or a puzzle to be pieced together — or, sometimes, an onion to be peeled.
Speaker Coaching Matters Because It Helps You Achieve What Matters to You
But in the end, what’s the point of all this activity? Only to support you in saying whatever needs to be said in your world — clearly and effectively, with a minimum of fear, self-doubt, or second guessing.
Thanks, Brian, for giving me a chance to say something that needed to be said in my world!
And thanks also to author and musician Mary Moreno, who reminded me to send Brian a hand-written thank you note!
