What Is Emotional Intelligence Coaching, and Why Does It Matter?
Emotional Intelligence (EQ) can be defined as a set of social and emotional skills that help us function effectively. Emotional intelligence coaching helps you to develop those skills.
Skills such as empathy, flexibility, and optimism were once belittled in the business world. Today, however, we know that these EQ skills, and others, play a major role in the success of individuals, organizations, and teams.
We also know that these skills can be developed, especially with good emotional intelligence coaching!
Emotional Intelligence Coaching Starts with an Assessment
The first step in coaching to develop your emotional intelligence is to take a reputable assessment.
There are many EQ instruments on the market, but my favorite — the one I’m certified to administer and coach on — is EQ-i 2.0.
I love that EQ-i 2.0 is:
- A common-sense approach that quantifies how you relate to yourself and others, but also measures daily survival skills like decision-making and stress management.
- An in-depth approach that looks at how much you’re using 15 different emotional skills, and how those skills reinforce each other.
- A practical approach that includes actions you can take to develop a skill (if you’d like more of it), or balance a skill, if you want more… balance!
Emotional Intelligence (EQ) Coaching Is All About What Works for You
Another thing I love about EQ coaching with the EQ-i 2.0 system is that it’s not one-size fits all.
Instead of assuming that more, more, more of a skill is always better, this approach recognizes that you can take a skill too far — like when self-awareness becomes naval-gazing, or social responsibility becomes martyrdom — or rely too much on one skill to the detriment of others.
Who decides how well these skills are working for you, and whether to build up a particular skill or balance it?
You do.
That’s how I approach public speaking coaching, too — not by trying to turn you into Oprah, Tony Robbins, or the latest TED talk celebrity, but by helping you build the skills you want to build… balance the skills you want to smooth out… and understand yourself and your audience… so that you can become the version of you that YOU want to be.
Public speaking coaching can help you present your best self when you communicate…
…and Emotional Intelligence coaching can help you define and develop that best self!
