Sometimes great public speaking comes in unexpected packages, and here’s a prime example.
This video’s “special message,” delivered by Chris Rock on Jimmy Kimmel Live, is one of the funniest and most pointed commentaries on race I’ve ever seen. By cataloging Barack Obama’s “white” habits, Chris Rock manages to skewer how we think about racial characteristics and the comfort we get from believing that other people are “like us.”
I’m not sure anyone except Rock could have pulled this off. There’s something about the warmth and acceptance of his smile, along with his joyous, almost-manic energy that makes this both hilarious and profoundly inclusive. IMHO, it’s as loving as it is perceptive.
What do you think?
