Small Talk
All of my blog posts on this very important subject are here. Remember that, when you’re making small talk on Zoom, you’ll have to focus even harder to “read” your conversational partner’s (CP’s) reaction. Try to stay focused on your device’s camera when you’re asking your CP a question, and most importantly, always pass the conversational ball back to them.
Use Public Speaking Best Practices to Be Heard (and Use Them Even More Online!)
These best practices are important whether you’re speaking to one person or an audience—and particularly important on a videoconference.
- Learn from the World’s Best Communicators, Babies
- Articulation Helps You Be Heard
- Your Accent Doesn’t Matter, Speaking Clearly Does
- Put Pauses in Your Public Speaking
The Instant Speech Format
- Master the Instant Speech, It’s Easy
- Have a Key Message About Your Audience
- When You Practice Instant Speeches…
If you’d like to read a wide range of posts about Instant Speeches, they’re here.
And if you’re interested in using the Instant Speech format to help you create full-length presentations, the best guide you can have (honestly!) is my book Speak Like Yourself… No, Really! It will take you step by step through the process, and pretty much anything else you need to know about public speaking and making presentations.
And last but not least,
Tips and Insights for How to Practice Your Public Speaking and Improve
I have to constantly remind myself that it’s better to practice a new skill for three minutes (or even 30 seconds) a day than for 30 minutes once a week. This post will help you do that.
Following this advice, choose one small thing to practice every day until you start to feel like it’s coming more naturally.
And since you’re practicing to speak on Zoom, be sure to practice in front of your mirror—not to give yourself a hard time, but to catch any bad habits that might have slipped in.
