After an intensely satisfying long weekend volunteering for College Summit (a superb organization that helps poor high school students get into college), I turned on my local NPR station this morning and heard a good conversation about the mid-term elections. In it, guest Susan Page made the distinction between a “choice” election (where you pick one platform over another) and a “referendum” election (where the other side doesn’t propose a clear alternative, so you’re really just voting thumbs up or thumbs down on what you’ve got now).
We all know how easy it can be to stick your thumb down, and how hard it is to create something truly positive. That’s part of why I’m so grateful to College Summit. In a “referendum” world, one in which we, the people, seem to have steadily fewer real choices (think Gulf Coast; how do we impact that?), any chance to make a positive and empowering difference is a blessing.
This weekend, I helped give four young people a taste of the power they can create through their words, and that feels really good
